Free ARRL Events App Now Live for 2025 Dayton Hamvention(R)

Make the most of your time at Dayton Hamvention(R) with the free ARRL Events app [ https://www.tripbuildermedia.com/apps/arrl ] . Hamvention is the
world's largest annual gathering of radio amateurs, and will be held May 16 - 18 in Xenia, Ohio. There is a lot to do and see. Use the ARRL Events app to make sure you don't miss a beat and plan out your visit now. Hundreds of your fellow hams have already installed the app this week.

The app includes Hamvention's full program, so you can browse and schedule forums, preview the extensive list of exhibitors, and find affiliated events. During the event, attendees can use other app features to follow the hourly prize drawings populated by the Dayton Hamvention Prize Committee and browse building and site maps.

Those going are also encouraged to tap on the MyProfile icon in the app to
add their name and call sign, email address, and any additional information they would like to share with other Hamvention guests. The MyBadge icon displays a QR code of your event badge that can be scanned by another
attendee or exhibitor using the Scan Badge icon - instantly connecting shared contact information with other hams at the event.

    The app is available for Apple [ https://apps.apple.com/us/app/arrl-events/id1456131489 ] and Android [ https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tripbuilder.arrl2019 ]
smart devices. You may also access the web browser version [ https://www.tripbuilder.net/html5/arrl ] , which is optimized for nearly any browser or other type of mobile device.

    Download the app here: www.tripbuildermedia.com/apps/arrl [ http://www.tripbuildermedia.com/apps/arrl ] (or use the web version [ https://www.tripbuilder.net/html5/arrl ] ).

Johns Hopkins University to Hold ARRL Teachers Institute

A session of the ARRL Teachers Institute on Wireless Technology [ https://www.arrl.org/teachers-institute-on-wireless-technology?utm_source=Informz&utm_medium=Email&utm_campaign=ARRL
] (TI) is being hosted this summer by the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab [ https://www.jhuapl.edu/ ] in Laurel, Maryland. This marks the first time a major research university has hosted the ARRL program.

The TI program is expanding significantly in 2025. Already, an institute was held on Staten Island, New York [ https://www.arrl.org/news/arrl-teachers-institute-a-success-on-staten-island?utm_source=Informz&utm_medium=Email&utm_campaign=ARRL
] , to mark the first regional session. Sessions in Texas and the
southeastern US are scheduled for the year as well.

Working with Johns Hopkins University is a result of ARRL Education and Learning Manager Steve Goodgame, K5ATA, exhibiting the program at the
National Science Teachers Association conference in Philadelphia [ https://www.arrl.org/news/arrl-learning-and-education-programs-in-front-of-15-000-science-teachers?utm_source=Informz&utm_medium=Email&utm_campaign=ARRL
] this past March. Representatives from the university saw Goodgame's presentation on the impact amateur radio can have on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) curriculum. "This is a huge win to have a name like Johns Hopkins interested in the work we are doing," said Goodgame. "We are hoping to partner with them frequently to hold more sessions, license teachers, and inspire kids."

Part of ARRL's mission is to inspire the next generation of radio amateurs,
but the TI takes it further, Goodgame added. "This isn't just about getting a group of teens licensed [ https://www.arrl.org/news/new-york-high-school-helps-license-amateur-radio-operators?utm_source=Informz&utm_medium=Email&utm_campaign=ARRL
] - it's about making young people think about how radio and wireless technology impact our world and integrate into the industrial landscape of tomorrow."

The ARRL Teachers Institute on Wireless Technology is funded entirely by donations to the ARRL Education and Technology Fund [ https://www.arrl.org/education-and-technology-fund/?utm_source=Informz&utm_medium=Email&utm_campaign=ARRL
    ] . Learn more about the program at www.arrl.org/ti [ http://www.arrl.org/ti?utm_source=Informz&utm_medium=Email&utm_campaign=ARRL

Promote Your Club's 2025 ARRL Field Day With Posters

    2025 ARRL Field Day [ http://www.arrl.org/FieldDay?utm_source=Informz&utm_medium=Email&utm_campaign=ARRL
] will be here before you know it! We're just 7 weeks away from ham radio's biggest event, held each year on the 4th full weekend of June (28 - 29 for 2025). The theme of "Radio Connects" [ https://www.arrl.org/news/radio-connects-is-2025-arrl-field-day-theme?utm_source=Informz&utm_medium=Email&utm_campaign=ARRL
] highlights the many ways amateur radio makes connections.

    [https://www.arrl.org/files/file/Field-Day/2025/2025 ARRL Field Day
    Poster.pdf]

As radio amateurs, we know the excitement of the weekend: it's part get-together, part emergency communications exercise, part operating event.
It is also amateur radio's time to shine and welcome the public to learn
about and experience this wonderful hobby.

A major aspect of any successful ARRL Field Day operation is the publicity
and outreach: How can the public learn about the event if they don't know it
is happening? The ARRL Public Relations and Outreach Committee recently held
a publicity workshop for public information volunteers. One of the tools presented is the 2025 ARRL Field Day Poster. It can be posted around your
area (think libraries, bulletin boards, community centers, etc.) with your event information filled in on it.

The 11x17" poster is available as a free download [ https://www.arrl.org/files/file/Field-Day/2025/2025 ARRL Field Day Poster.pdf
] [PDF] or available for purchase in packs of 25 [ https://www.arrl.org/shop/FieldDay?utm_source=Informz&utm_medium=Email&utm_campaign=ARRL
] from the ARRL Store. It tells the story of amateur radio as fun hobby, resource for public service, and tool for inspiring the next generation of technical leaders by providing a hands-on sandbox where students gain experience in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

ARRL Public Relations and Outreach Manager Sierra Harrop, W5DX, says now is a great time to plaster the posters around your community. "The summer tends to be a busy time with weddings, travel, and other activities. Get your club's ARRL Field Day activities in front of people now with the posters so they can plan to be there."

    In Brief...

Scouts and Hams Celebrate in the Rain
Even an inch of rain could not stop hundreds of scouts, or amateur radio operators, at the centennial of Camp Lazarus near Delaware, Ohio, this past weekend. ARRL Great Lakes Division Vice Director Roy Hook, W8REH, said the weather was lousy, cold with an all-day rain. "We were inside the large back porch of the main building, so we were out of the rain but not the cold, but
we did have several stations operating," said Hook. "Our turnout was good,
with many hams from various clubs attending, and we were able to interest
many of the Scouts and parents who stopped by." Hook went on the say that a trip to check out the dining hall provided a surprise, finding hundreds of Scouts "chowing down" inside. The weather didn't dampen their spirits, he noted, it just changed where they were hanging out and having fun. A group of Scouts, 12 to 13 years old, discovered they could send emails from the
WinLink PC, so they took turns sending messages to their family and friends.

    Announcements

The FBI Amateur Radio Association in Fredericksburg, Virigina, will host a special event for National Police Week May 11 - 18, 2025. K3FBI/0-9 will be
on the air from 0001Z Sunday, May 11 through 2359Z Sunday, May 18, operating all bands and all modes. A certificate is available. The event honors all law enforcement members who have died in the line of duty. There will be multiple stations from around the U.S. operating. On May 11, K3FBI/9 will operate from the Little Bohemia Lodge in Manitowish Waters, Wisconsin. This was the scene
of the 1934 raid to capture John Dillinger and Baby Face Nelson, and where
FBI Special Agent W. Carter Baum was killed. In addition, on May 11 - 17,
    0000Z - 0000Z, the W. Travis Loften High School ARC [ https://www.sbac.edu/loften ] , K4WTL, will operate special event station
    N4P.

The 2nd annual Queens of the Mountains YL Summits on the Air (SOTA) special event weekend will start at 0000Z on June 7 and end at 2359Z on June 8, 2025. The biggest change from last year is that women from around the world are
being invited to activate summits. After positive feedback and support from several international YL resources last year, the hope for 2025 is that YLs world-wide will participate, making this a truly international event. New
this year, event use of special 1X1 call signs for U.S. participants is not required. Operators may apply for and use a 1X1 call sign, but everyone
should feel free to use their own call sign. All amateur radio operators, OM and YL, are invited to chase the Queens, and all SOTA YLs around the world
are encouraged to activate. In addition to certificates recognizing various levels of achievement by YL activators, all chasers are eligible to receive a certificate for working 5 or more YL activators. For more information, visit www.sota.org.

    The ARRL Solar Report

ARRL Solar Report May 8, 2025

Solar activity was low for the past several days and is expected to remain
low with a chance for M-class (R1-R2/minor-moderate) flare activity through
    May 9.

A simultaneous filament eruption produced a narrow coronal mass ejection
(CME) signature that was first observed on May 6, and an additional slower filament eruption was also observed. Analysis of the events is ongoing and there was no significant growth or decay observed in the spotted regions on
    the visible sun.

The solar wind environment remained enhanced during the same period due to continued negative polarity Coronal Hole High Speed Streams (CH HSS) influences. A gradual return to normal background conditions is likely over
May 8 as CH HSS influence wanes. An additional enhancement is likely on May 9 due to the anticipated onset of another negative polarity CH HSS.

    The 10.7-centimeter flux: May 8, 160; May 9 - 11, 165; May 12, 160; May 13 - 20, 155. There were no radio blackouts during the past 24 - 48 hours.

    Predicted sunspots: May 8, 145; May 9, 144; May 10, 145; May 11, 146
