Who isn't perturbed by being woke up in the middle of the night?
It seems to me that Krygowski is the one who lives a miserable,
unhappy existence. A good share of his RBT posts involve him whining
and complaining about something. He doesn't like how the bicycling
trends are heading; he doesn't like the frame designs; he doesn't like
the newer bicycle components; he doesn't like the newer accessories;
he doesn't like bicycle helmets, flashy shirts, or SPD shoes and
pedals; he doesn't like the bicycle infrastructure trends; he doesn't
like bicycle trails; he doesn't like guns; he doesn't like the
marketing of anything, he clearly dislikes the current political
trend, he hates people who ignore his advice; he hates that people
drive instead riding their bikes to their jobs or the grocery store.
When he's not complaining about something, he trying to get people to
change their minds and agree with him, which doesn't happen very
often, so then he whines and complains about that. His brags and lies
are scattered among his constant complaints and attempts to manipulate others. His need for imaginary friends is hardly surprising. He has
probably driven away all the people who know him.
I had my usual coffee and some reading at the diner, then
went out to find the newspaper. None to be had, an hour of
driving around to no avail. It's 28 with light snow, not
much accumulation, and windy. New Year's Day ride coming up
in four hours will be the high point of the day.

and finished with 1 mile on treadmill walking. Went to Mass and when I
got home I put 27 miles on the indoor trainer. 124 watts 17.3 mph. It is >way to windy to ride outside. I might go out to walmart and get a few
items just to get out of the house a bit. I have a thing now for these >butter rum lifesavers hard candy.
Oh my brother made yesterday homemade french onion soup. It is great
with some croutons and mozz cheese on top. Great stuff with a sandwich.
After waking up the second time and posting a blurb or two on Usenet,
I went outside and disassembled my wife's Christmas decorations. After putting them back in their boxes for transport to the storage locker
in the truck, I took the Catrike out of the truck, put it on it's
maintenance rack and cleaned and wear checked the chain. I came in,
washed up, cooked up a ground round, Alfredo, and Cavatelli pasta dish
for my still recovering wife. Shortly, after I finish my wine, I'm
going to go back out and lube the chain. The Catrike will have to
remain on it's maintenance rack until we get all her indoor
decorations ready for transport to storage.
I'm lucky to be this active and useful at my age, and in spite of
somebody's rude comment about me here on Usenet, my wife and I are
very happy people.
Most of Krygowski's RBT posts are about something he's unhappy about,
and he says I'm a miserable old man.
Clearly a case of projection.

If you description is correct and it's the left crank that's trying to
fall off, it needs to slide off the spindle to the left about 1/2 inch
before falling off. It will probably happen in a series of small
lurches instead of one monumental slide towards oblivion. That you
give you plenty of time to notice that your left leg feels rather odd
trying to apply pressure, at an angle, to the left pedal.
If it's the right crank, it will need to slide to a larger distance.
However, that doesn't matter because the sliding will cause the chain
line to be misaligned. That should produce a tangled chain and
probably a sudden stop before the crank and chainring fall off the
spindle. You should also notice the right shifter indexing to be
moving to the right.

I love reading your postings. It shows a level of ignorance I've seldom observed.
Ignorance is curable by obtaining an education and gaining some
experience. Stupidity isn't curable by these means.

There must be _some_ way to tell it's getting loose, or prevent it from getting loose. You're the only one here who has had a crank fall off!
Splined cranks of all types give plenty of warning before they fall off.
They don't get as wobbly as a loose square-taper, but they do wobble.
