• New Years Eve

    From Mark J cleary@21:1/5 to All on Tue Dec 31 13:34:30 2024
WEll it is that day and being a jazz guitarist no gig for me. That is
great worst night in the world to play. Had to ride inside today on the
trainer too windy, wet, and cold. I should probably clean up the Habby
Disc bike but if the truth be known probably will ride the same and not
    be a lot better off.

The next though is what to have for dinner. I had a New York Strip
yesterday so no steak today. I am thinking of possible a doctored up
Jack's Pizza. I would assume no one has had one of these frozen pizzas
but I like them. ON sale sometimes 3 for 10$. I can knock a full one out
    just right.

My next project is I have a $25 visa gift card to burn but you cannot
really use them online that I can see. They are really a PIA better just
    to gift money.

It looks like no problem tomorrow will not be riding outside.

I made the same conclusion on this morning's stiff damp
wind. The sleet/ice is back and in this wind there are
    slick spots on the roads.

I was out today exploring some of the standing Stones around Avebury and
tracks I’d not been to, very muddy to the point of clogging up the MTB
front tire which is something of achievement as it’s a Magic Mary so while not a full mud tire does clear generally well, but the tracks where just
too soggy and vegetation matter which is always what cause clogs!

Rather windy but was relatively sheltered or tail wind until last drag
along the Ridgeway old multi thousand year old road, way before the Romans
    etc!

Did pick up the rear puncture which is probably also due to vegetation
matter! But hadn’t noticed until rolling back to car when it felt squishy! Flat as now, I’ll sort it out Thursday plus properly clean and lube the
    MTB.

About the antiquities: One of my friends and teaching colleagues was
English, an engineer who had come over here to take a job at Lockheed
    before going into teaching.

He used to crack that "In England, all of American History is covered
    under Current Events."

Did his evaluation of American History include the Brit's begging the
USA for assistance in two world wars?

Don't get me wrong. I'm happy my ancestors were able to help.

By the way, archeologists have discovered American inhabitants from
14,000 years ago, with some estimates as far back as 40,000 years ago.
Why the European cultures became more productive is anyone's guess,
but I don't believe it anything to do with race. Perhaps (my opinion)
it was just that the vast amount of available land did not precipitate
as much tribal warring. Wars seem to have been the mother of
    invention.

Yes, there was tribal warring in prehistoric America, but not on the
scale of what happened in Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa,
with massive armies invading and conquering, huge territories and
    enslaving the inhabitants.

The American indians were no slouches in the slavery

for repetitive small wars as was Europe at the time.

Yes, I know that, but it was still not w arring on the scale of
the huge, organized and well equipped armies that marched and sailed
across Middle Europe and the Mediterranean.

Jokes aside even European history in the Americas goes back a few centuries
so beyond Current events though some cities ie ones on the west coast are
quite new, mind you so are the industrial heartlands of wales from Merthyr
to Brynmawr all started late 18th century ie Industrial Revolution.

Clearly American history does seem to go back further with various peoples making it across.

I received a $25 Visa gift card for my birthday that doesn't seem to
work. It's registered, and the website says there's $25 available, but
I've tried it both on-line and at point-of-sale a few times and it never
    goes through.

You might want to look into that. For someone with your sort of income that is a lot of money.

I checked, and the gift card I used online was actually an American

I'd bet there are tons of gift cards that were paid for but
lost, or otherwise never used. It might be an important
    revenue stream for some businesses.

Yes, and that's true for paper gift certificates as well.

However electronic transfer cards introduce a series of
other issues, one of which is:
