The odds on former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley winning the 2024 presidential election have improved sharply over the past few days,
according to a leading bookmaker, after social media speculation that
Donald Trump could follow the example set by President Joe Biden and
drop out of the contest.
On August 6, William Hill, a betting company in the U.K., offered odds
of 250/1 (0.4 percent) on Haley being elected president in November, but
these were slashed to 50/1 (2 percent) on Thursday. A William Hill
spokesperson suggested these odds are premised on Haley replacing Trump
as the Republican candidate rather than running as an independent.
Haley, who served as U.S. ambassador to the U.N. under Trump, ran for
the 2024 Republican presidential nomination but was defeated by her
former boss. However, on August 1, Anthony Scaramucci, who briefly
served as Trump's White House communications director in July 2017,
suggested the 2024 Republican presidential nominee "may leave the race," adding, "Just watch his poll numbers plummet and see what happens."
Speaking to Newsweek on Thursday, William Hill spokesperson Lee Phelps
said: "There have been numerous twists in the race for the U.S.
presidency already, and we could be seeing another big one developing as momentum builds behind Republican Nikki Haley in the market.
"The former governor of South Carolina—who exited the race in March—was
a no-hoper at 250/1 on Tuesday, but we've seen good support for her in
the last 48 hours, so much so that she has shortened all the way into 50/1.
"It's too early to say whether we could be seeing a move within the
Republican Party to replace Donald Trump, but interestingly, the former president is weak in the market, and there is now nothing to split him
and Kamala Harris at 10/11."

Haley, who ended her presidential campaign in March after a string of
Super Tuesday losses, has not given any indication that she seeks to
replace Trump as the official Republican nominee. Newsweek contacted representatives of Haley and Trump's 2024 presidential election campaign
for comment by email outside regular office hours.
On Thursday, William Hill also offered odds of 11/2 (15.4 percent) on
Haley becoming the 2024 Republican vice presidential candidate should
Ohio Senator JD Vance be replaced, compared with 12/1 (7.7 percent) at
the end of July.
Before she dropped out of the GOP presidential primary, Haley won 95
Republican National Convention delegates, more than any other candidate
besides Trump, who secured victory with more than 2,200 delegates.

On July 21, Biden, who had been the Democratic Party's presumptive 2024 presidential candidate, stepped down from the race and endorsed Harris, following a wave of concern over the 81-year-old's age and mental agility.
In the weeks since, Harris has outperformed Trump, whom Biden had
generally been trailing, in over a dozen polls. According to leading bookmakers, she has become the favorite to win in November.
