Happy 84th birthday to legend Ann Margret! At the height of her career,
she put it on hold to make multiple trips to Vietnam to entertain the
troops. At one point, her helicopter came under heavy ground fire when traveling to Phi Bai, 50 miles north of Da Nang.
“I was never scared, never worried,” recalled Ann years later. “I was with my boys, they always had my back."
When Ann wasn't in Vietnam or lighting up the big screen, she was
visiting wounded vets in VA hospitals or taking the time to chat with
them before and after live performances.
In 2003, the USO honored Ann with the Spirit of Hope award, named after
the legendary Bob Hope.
“I moved to this country as a little girl, and for those boys to give
their lives for my freedom, I'll never stop thanking them” said a
tearful Ann in her acceptance speech.
