• MesNews TLS version and Astraweb issue

From Jess Fertudei@21:1/5 to All on Tue May 14 18:29:41 2024
    Hello again

I am trying to dump Giganews once and for all but not going so well at
    the moment.

    Using MesNews v1.08.06.00

Anybody happen to know what version of TLS it is using? Astraweb says
1.0 & 1.1 not supported, 1.2 and up needed. I am downloading fine, is
there something here that would prevent me from posting? Not sure how
that should matter, but... .. .

Signed up for Astraweb and get only 440 when I try to reply or create
an original article. Sending a ticket to their support was fruitless...
have they become unreachable like GN and Newshosting seems to be?

I participate in a few mild binary discussions and only seldom grab a
few hundred k's of posts, but for the most part don't use but a few (2
or 3?) gigs a year, so I signed up for a block of 20 or 25 or whatever
it is and thought that may be the issue, so I upgraded to the $15 for a
month just to find out and still only get 440 posting not allowed
    errors.

Is it Astraweb that is the issue or my MesNews that works fine on GN,
except that the wheels have come off at GN after decades of using them
    when 'everything just worked'.

    Thoughts on the situation?

    TIA

If memory serves me, you need to ask for posting privileges through email.
It's a way to limit autobots creating free test accounts and post a crap
load of <insert your fav hated posting here>.

Thanks. After a small internet search the other night, I wondered about
that as it seemed some said they did and others that disputed it. So, I
opened a support ticket about it and it seems to lead to a black hole.
Maybe they will get back to me - I don't have high hopes after some of
the experiences I have had with two other potential providers. I guess
I just did not put much faith in the one that said permission was
needed as it seemed like reading *and* posting were just a natural part
    of the whole deal. <SHRUG>

Maybe I need to look their pageS over better and see if I see another
email address or contact of some sort by slim chance.

    Thanks again.

    fixed.

Last release is more than a decade ago. I doubt it will support TLS 1.3.

Started a new ticket and this time their support was great. Posting is
    fixed.

    Thanks,

AstraWeb wants 1.2, not 1.3, however. How old is 1.2? I know I am
getting old, lol, and a lot of things seem like not that long ago.
