• Newsreader that keeps messages and has a good text search

    From Justisaur@21:1/5 to All on Mon Aug 12 08:34:41 2024
    I've been using Thunderbird since Google Groups shut down, but I mostly
    enjoyed GG for the ability to quickly find messages by keywords. I set
    TB to keep all messages, but it's search has been horrible and can't
    find hardly anything. It also had a bug last week where it
    re-downloaded all the messages and now everything older than a week just
    comes up with an error.

    Now Thunderbird has just decided there's no messages in this group, when
    I just downloaded the last 500 and started looking at them.

    One of the other I'm looking for is the ability to retain all messages
    in a particular newsgroup,

    Also built in spellcheck. I remember I tried a couple other newsreaders
    like x-news which is supposed to have a way to set up spellcheck but I
    couldn't get working.

    I'm on PC, so running in Windows (10 right now) is a must.

    I don't care at all about binaries as I'm using eternal-september. I
    don't mind paying a little, and am considering Agent too.

    Agent 8.0 has global search, a spell checker and supports news & snews.

    You can find a registration key for it in a search on google groups.
    Agent is now abandonware, so you can no longer buy a registration key.

    I was considering that, but I found out Agent will eventually quit
    working for posts on Jan 19, 2038 and later. Yes it's 13 years away. I don't really want that to sneak up on my though.

    I'm considering 40tude dialog or microplanet gravity. People seem to be
    more vocal that dialog is better, but the site for them, and all links
    to them are asking for a username and password login to access them,
    which makes me skeptical.

    Both haven't been touched/supported in 14+ years either which doesn't
    instill any confidence.

    I have good luck with 40tude Dialog, and I run it under wine on Linux. It
    may be old, but consider that Usenet hasn't changed much either. It's
    working fine for me.

    Are there any more modern or updated text newsreaders that aren't tied
    to pay servers, or primarily for email?

    Not really, as far as gui programs. Sylpheed is ok, but it has one issue I really dislike. Unless I'm using it incorrectly, when it does an automatic check of the server while I'm reading a message the message then just disappears (no longer Unread). I find that irritating.

    First stop for 40tude Dialog is nowadays the German FAQ. It translates
    fairly well to English through Google Translate and hosts the setup file
    and the updated .41 program file in the Download section.

    https://www.barghahn-online.de/4td_faq/ https://www-barghahn--online-de.translate.goog/4td_faq/?_x_tr_sl=de&_x_tr_tl=en

    Be sure to read the "Installation" section of the FAQ and preferably stick
    to the "Portable installation", i.e. outside of any "managed folder" like C:\Program Files (x86).

    big plus ones...40tude dialog works best of all! just do a clean,
    "portable" install (do not install to default x86 program folder):

    That will affect a lot of other software; it is not unique to Agent.
    The Y2038 bug's Wikipedia page does not even mention Agent.

    <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Year_2038_problem>

    I would recommend you check any other newsreader you are considering,
    whether it too will quit working on Jan 19, 2038.

    for this example, the popular newsreader 40tude dialog makes scoring
    on all headers easy, even for the novice; it's plain text and can be
    tested in settings > scoring and actions, and matched help > regular
    expression tester; score numbers can be anything from -9999 to +9999

    [*]
    # for scoring non-overview headers
    =-1000 Header {^X\-No\-Archive: yes}
    =-1001 Header {^X\-Trace: individual}
    # mnemonic "1/1=1", solo, single, one
    =-1559 Header {^X\-Complaints\-To: abuse@tweaknews.nl}
    # mnemonic "hotel des tournelles", pl. vosges
    =-1993 Header {^Injection\-Info: dont\-email}

    =-9000 Header {^X\-Usenet\-Provider: http://www.giganews}

    After looking into that, I'm guessing both 40tude and Microplanet
    Gravity are affected due to their last updates being 14+ years ago, but
    I don't see any way to be sure either way.

    40tude Dialog stores dates using the DOSDateTime format inside its database. This format has 1980 as start offset year (= minimum) and uses 7 bits for storing the year part of date. Therefore, dates up to 2107 can be safely written.

    If the program can import MBOX files, this can be tested by importing
    an MBOX file with some messages' "Date:" headers set to after 2038.
    Check two things:
    1. Dates after 2038 _display_ correctly in the message list.
    2. Dates after 2038 are in the correct _order_ in the message list.

    Similarly if the program can import .eml files (single message).

    I wonder if Usenet servers will be affected considering their age? I
    assume at least pay ones would want to fix the problems. Not sure about
    the free ones.

    This will not affect the content of messages themselves.
    It is a question for things like:
     *  Getting new groups, where the server returns a list of groups
        added after a specified date (NNTP 'NEWGROUPS' command).
     *  Retention, where servers purge older messages.
        And even for the big premium news servers which do not purge, AIUI     older messages are still moved to a back-end low-traffic "archive"     server from where they can still be retrieved.

    Many of the free servers run INN, and INN is updated regularly. <https://github.com/InterNetNews/inn/tags>

    To be clear: I already did a similar test after checking my 40tude Dialog database format reference. And verified, that messages up to Dec 31 2107
    are handled fine by Dialog. Any errors in the relevant date string(s) when receiving/importing a message will result in database entries referencing
    the DOSDateTime minimum value, though, aka Jan 1 1980. Errors are date
    values of Jan 1 2108 and beyond as well as wrongly formatted date strings.

    UTC time offsets may trigger a message being Jan 1 2108 even when the date
    text states Dec 31 2107, of course. This will also result in a database
    date of Jan 1 1980.
