This is a helpful and rational behaviour of your iPhone given you delete messages from "friends". We are talking only about iMsg, right?

    Any way to kill that?

AFAIK, no. Beware: I share my location only with my wife and I would
never delete messages from or to her in iMsg.

For me, I like to keep my iPhone's Messages app empty if possible. I don't like to hoarde.

Why do you delete text messages from people you share your
    location with?

For me, I like to keep my iPhone's Messages app empty if possible. I
    don't like to hoarde.

I want past conversations available for reference. My memory isn't
what it used to be. The only conversations I manually delete are ones
I know will never be needed again like appointment confirmations, two
    factor PINS, spam, etc.

Exactly this. I only keep the important ones. I wished there was a way
to organize in archiving like e-mails like put them in KEEP folders.

iMessages has a setting where messages older than xx days are
automatically deleted. That may be an acceptable solution.

I don't use that since I want to review and delete them manually.

Primarily on advice of counsel-- prevents the cops or Customs and Border Protection officers from finding evidence of international drug

Keeping more than a message or two on your phone has a new definition = hoarding.

Those are fine. I just don't understand why some people keep years and
even decades. They even keep those expired 2FA SMSes. :/
