    Installing using the standard installer:

Have you tried it when some stepper motor drivers are connected using
    USB to serial port adapters?

I do not remember if I explicitly chose some installer menu to save
logs, but I have /var/log/installer/ and in particular

         /var/log/installer/hardware-summary

that is quite lengthy, 75+ kilobytes, what would I be looking for?

AIR the only thing plugged in at last install, was the button for a
logitek k360 keyboard and a 325 mouse, one button did both.

So Gene's install logs might shed some light on what actually happened.

I am interested in some equivalent of

         lsusb -vt
quite lengthy today, nearly 2 screens full and has 2 serial convertors,
one a fdti for heyu's cm-11a and a ch340 in my big brother color inkjet,
but they were all unplugged at install, only the  single button for
keyboard & mouse was plugged in.  That printer also has a cat5 input and
an ipv4 address, which is also hooked up but usb is hugely, obviously
much faster..  Part of the slow is that the last time I tcpdumped it,
the driver sent a bogus checksum the first 6 times before it sent a good checksum. May have been fixed since as the driver has been refreshed
several times to keep up with cups changes since. Its getting old and
its huge, can use tabloid sized paper even, does stunning work on good
    color paper.
    ls /dev/tty*
    ditto
executed from installer console or immediately after first reboot. I
suspect Gene may forget to disconnect some USB hub plugged into other
    side of the box.

Nothing is plugged into front, don't think the only front port usb is
even in the machine as it was the original speed stuff., so all usb i/o
is out of the rear and at least usb2. No, even the floppy slot is just a
full height hole in the front panel. The side isn't on the machine, the
i5 heat sink and fan are too tall, side won't fit.

There is also, because I have an old Sony digital Handi-Cam, a semi
hi-def hi8 camera, a firewire card, bought before apple killed it with
their exorbitant license demand. Replacements if it should fail are made
out of pure unobtainium today. I use kino to edit its output when I
shoot a wedding etc.  Could that be miss-interpreted as a serial device?

    Merry Christmas everybody.

    .

    Cheers, Gene Heskett, CET.
