No need to shake your head, dear boy!

    It's an art form! ;-)

    - the Apple Mac is a magical place for malware to
hide if folk can be persuaded to deliberately load and authorise suspect
    software.

There's nothing magical about macOS. If you've fallen victim to a phishing scam, there's nothing the OS can do.

As far as I'm aware, I've NEVER fallen for a phishing scam.

Having said that, none of the "suspect software" you claim is dodgy matches that description.

    That's good to know!

If you did either, what user name did you use?

Would have to check but probably Brock McNuggets.

How difficult would that be for you to check?

I'd be most grateful if you'd do that and let me know. TIA.

Went to sign in and it says they are doing updates.

In 15 years of use I have NEVER seen that!

Curious. I saw it a few minutes ago.

    Odd.

    It is gone now.

Did anyone ELSE see that happen?

THAT is a question you could ask on the ASC forums!

Why would I ask about them directly telling me the system was being updated? What would the value be? The system was being updated. No mystery. Nothing that impacts my life.

I have NEVER encountered ASC forum updates. I've never heard any mention

    Curiouser and curiouser!

    A short update. No harm.

You ASSUME that, you don't know for sure!

You assume there is all sorts of bad stuff going on. Have you considered checking with a mental health professional what this says about you? Not being
snarky... you have the idea you should always check and verify... how have you

    So? Why does that matter?

    Because technology changes rapidly.

This part of macOS has NOT changed at all. How many folk realise that reinstalling the macOS will NOT eradicate any previously installed malware?

Anyone who has a clue re what they are doing around computers.

See, if you understood what an OS was and what isn't part of the OS
(like the personal info you state is still present), what part of it
    don't you understand?

It wouldn't happen in many instances (and never had).

    Who knew?

Anyone who had an idea about computers.

    Did you?

    Yes.

Many OSs even warn you that a reinstall will or won't wipe user data / everything and / or allow you to choose which.

You sound very much like my Dad in this as he also knew fuck all about computers. He was allowed to buy and use a later version of OSX and then
was surprised when half his apps no longer worked, something anyone who
'knew their stuff' would have already known (or who had read the
    installation instructions).

Over the many years I was building, upgrading and maintaining computers
for many people it was interesting to learn the number of people who
suggested they were 'computer literate' who were actually only 'familiar
    with MS Word' etc.

Ask them to send you a Word document and they would do it from Word (or whatever), rather than picking it up via the F/S directly.

Did you say you *have* still got the box for that Mac?

You should remember that the procedure is "wipe and reinstall" not just "reinstall" when malware is the problem.

    https://support.apple.com/en-gb/guide/mac-help/mh27903/mac

Actually, FTR, I've never forgotten that it is essential to erase my

How would YOU have answered the OP's question?

That article is from 7 years ago.

DB probably wrote it. All he does is post links to his old
    questions, in a
desperate attempt to get more replies to his ancient questions.

    +1

How did you make two posts at the same time?  (2206)

Send in a batch, like Gremlin does or type really really fast.

Will you, please, explain exactly how one can do that?

    Thanks, if you will.

Write in offline mode, then go online,

I see. I've never tried to do that. It seems to be against the spirit of Usenet.

    or type really really fast.

That's what 'pothead' says he did! ;-)

    Btw .....

Some weeks ago I suggested to Tim Davies that he try to speak more
    slowly in his YouTube videos.

    His response to me?

//People ask me to change the whole time but none of them have a Youtube channel and have no idea of what it takes to constantly put out videos,
it's not easy but I'm not changing for people - it's who I am, you'll

    *Listen faster*!

    I really liked that! 🙂

You are correct. The process is a bit more involved for Intel Macs... but I >>> have pointed him to the steps.

Where and when did you do that, please?

I did it the day I said that... a few minutes before. I think this is the link
    I shared:

    https://support.apple.com/en-us/102639

That's it! (I stumbled across it later!). Thanks.

Personally, I think using Option-Command-R or Shift-Option-Command-R to
start up from *Recovery over the Internet* is a better approach.

    (It raining here. :-( )

For me that might be a good thing... but it does not rain often here. Hope you
    have a good day.

It's been good, thanks. My daughter and her family have been over to
enjoy a Sunday roast with us here at home. This is the first occasion
for more than a year because, as you know, we had flood/water damage to
our house in August 2023. All went well! 🙂

Anyway, getting back to your question, the only reasonably sure method for eliminating nasty stuff
that might be left on an hdisk is to perform something like a DOD wipe.

I'm pretty sure he has 'issues' and some offer him some 'care in the
community' but he doesn't seem to appreciate or benefit from it.

He has admitted to being instilled with a sense of entitlement and that
is also part of his issue.

He gets himself banned from most places he pollutes and because he can't
learn from his mistakes (because he doesn't see / accept them as such),
simply carries on doing the same old same old.

I've had enough of it / him but then I've never suffered fools (or

Whenever I have followed this procedure (many times whilst

Whenever I have followed this procedure (many times whilst

You do not need to, but it makes things easier down the road. You can only have so many machines tied to the account at a time (I think).

How might my failure to do so have impeded a satisfactory erasure.

It would be erased but Apple would think those devices were still on the system and it might lead to confusion or a limit.

    Understood. Many thanks. 🙂

How would YOU have answered the OP's question?

What was wrong/inappropriate with asking this question on the ASC forums?

This has been covered. You repeatedly ask both products and developers and imply they are doing improper things with little or no evidence. This is deemed inappropriate.

What - in detail - was "inappropriate" in my question?

I'm deadly serious in this quest, Snit.

    Can you identify anything controversial?

I've asked *WHY* in a new thread in ACW.

For what conceivable reason was the question removed?

That article is from 7 years ago.

    So? Why does that matter?

    Because technology changes rapidly.

This part of macOS has NOT changed at all. How many folk realise that
reinstalling the macOS will NOT eradicate any previously installed malware? >>
You should remember that the procedure is "wipe and reinstall" not just
"reinstall" when malware is the problem.

    https://support.apple.com/en-gb/guide/mac-help/mh27903/mac

But also keep in mind the need for this with macOS is very rare.

Ha! I'm a past master at doing it, Snit! I love to experiment, simply to
    find out answers. 🙂

Just for a moment suppose ..... that some naive Mac user visits the ASC
    forums and asks for advice.

Just suppose that they are 'invited' to download and run software which
has not been vetted by the Apple App Store.

Just suppose that it is later suggested that they then re-install their
macOS, which they proceed to do (without first erasing their hard drive)

Everything should then simply 'work' - and it will!

What about malicious code installed at the time as using the unapproved software? THAT is left untouched on the machine - a hidden backdoor.

Any thoughts on this possible scenario?

I do not recall all the details -- but we have talked about this before: you go there asking about apps / developers and suggesting they might be doing wrong when there is absolutely no evidence they are. This is not even about Apple software but third party software which is not relevant for the site. You do this over and over even when asked by them not to. Other than killing your account how could they have gotten you to stop?

your account how could they have gotten you to stop?

I'm talking about the question posed THIS WEEK!

Was it a part of a pattern of exaggerated and inappropriate concern you have
    expressed there?

    Absolutely not.

    What was it about?

    Are you kidding me Snit?

I do not keep track of your questions. They are usually about some product.

You had a recent question about resetting a computer. Is that what you mean? I
do not know if you had others.

This Message-ID: <lieo8nF2lssU3@mid.individual.net> laid out the
question almost exactly as I'd posted it on the ASC forums.

I'm deadly serious in this quest, Snit.

    Can you identify anything controversial?

I've asked *WHY* in a new thread in ACW.

For what conceivable reason was the question removed?

Not sure what you are asking about being removed... something in ACW? Not
    possible.

Perhaps someone else will explain if you cannot understand what has been >>>>>> written so very clearly. <sigh>

The question on the Apple forum... you posted the reasons why. Surely you do
    not mean that, do you?

I posted the same question here in ACW

    What Message ID?

    <liom1iFi2vaU1@mid.individual.net>

I do not see an issue with asking how to reset a Mac... though the answer was already on the Apple database.

So what WAS "inappropriate" about my question, repeated here:-

//I was recently having some problems with iTunes, and decided to
reinstall macOS Sierra. I held Command+R on startup and clicked on
"Reinstall macOS" without erasing the hard drive in Disk Utility. Once
the reinstall was complete, I started back up and all of my files and
programs were still there, along with my settings, desktop wallpaper,
and everything else. (The iTunes problems were fixed.)//

What exactly does this "Reinstall" feature do, if it doesn't remove
programs and change settings to default?//

    Here are answers on-line:- https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/276766/what-does-reinstall-macos-do-exactly

How would YOU have answered the OP's question?

Yes, I actually *know* the answer to this. They got you to download
bad stuff in the hope it would take you offline, hopefully forever.

It didn't work so thy had to ban you.

It's what I would have done if I was a user / admin on that site.

You are partly right. I gave the password to Snit so that HE could
use the Pro version of EtreCheck - which he did.

    Likely breaking the licence rules.

    Absolutely right!

Shortly afterwards his Apple iMac ceased to function.

He stopped replying to you you mean, not necessarily the same thing.

WTF???  He's still posting here in the ACW group!

    A coincidence I'm sure.

Oh yes, you must be right, shame it killed his Mac <wink>

The one he was going to fix with an engraving device!

And you are talking of someone you consider 'a friend' here right'?

    Yes, of course! 🙂

He wasn't being serious when he said that, numpty!

If you owned a computer and were doing something like re-installing the

No, I wouldn't have included the 'honest' (as you would call them) bits

Was it you perchance as it very much fits your MO and false sense of entitlement?

    No, it wasn't me.

I found it by chance when looking for a suitable 'test' question to
trigger controversy - the Apple Mac is a magical place for malware to
hide if folk can be persuaded to deliberately load and authorise suspect software.

It is not about "balls" it is about desire and being appropriate.

When did YOU last post a question on the ASC forums?

When did you last ANSWER a question on the ASC forums?

If you did either, what user name did you use?

    Etresoft is closed? https://www.google.com/search?
    client=safari&rls=en&q=etresoft&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8

I see the same in both Safari and Firefox.

    Odd.

    I'd appreciate a reply.

Get fucked, David. Nobody cares about your stalking activities.

Ah! So YOU support the use of the non-Apple approved software called
    EtreCheck?

    Is that right?

No, it's not, they are right, we really don't care about your one man
(?) crusade into harassing innocent people.

    Hardly very 'Christian' is it?

What makes YOU think that "John Daniel" is "innocent"?

If there was anything that would actually get you sectioned it's this.

Leave it and find something more wholesome to do, unless you really
think that you are the only one to see though to these people as being
real bad guys? (Think on your actual computer skills before answering).

I have found no-one yet who has reverse-engineered EtreCheck.

Folk have *NO CLUE* as to what they are loading onto their computer when
    they use it.

This combination of statements leads me to believe that BDB doesn't have
a good grasp of what 'reverse-engineered' means in the context of software.

Folk have *NO CLUE* as to what they are loading onto their computer
    when they use it.

This part implies that what BDB thinks he is talking about is something
along the lines of 'knows *exactly* what E'Chk is doing to do what it
    'does'.

But that isn't what reverse engineering would mean for s/w. If one were
going to 'reverse engineer' E'Chk, they would create a software which
performs the same duties as E'Chk w/o having any access to E'Chk's
    source code.

This 'type of' mistaken thinking is because BDB has a theory that E'Chk
is 'nefarious'. What would be helpful to dispel that theory would be if
BDB or someone who is actually capable of reading the source code had
    access to that.

JD implies that he would make such source code available to someone, but
not just with the conventional license he provides.

This License does not grant you the right to access to the source
code of the Software. If, in certain circumstances, such access is
desired by you, you may enter into a separate license with Etresoft.

The wp article on reverse engineering has an extensive section on what
the term means in the case of software and distinctly addresses the
issue of source code as part of the discussion.

If BDB weren't so daft in the head about how he 'interprets' JD and his software that causes him to simply 'make things up' to misrepresent
anything he encounters in that sphere so as to appear delusional he
might be able to 'see things' like a normal person, instead of whatever
    he is.

No, EtreCheck is not open-source software. It’s a proprietary diagnostic tool
