    Hello!
I'm thinking about stopping paying for binary USENET servers because they're
    no longer useful to me.

QUESTION: Is there a free news reader, even if it does not handle binary groups, that can be used to view and participate in text groups like this?

    Thank you!

If you're on OSX Unison is free and will work through Mojave:

    https://panic.com/blog/the-future-of-unison/

Unison is good, but does have a few 'quirks'. It can randomly crash,
although only occasionally. It also has a bad bug which can often
mislabel the author of a post in the topic lists. Being long abandoned,
the 'quirks' will never be fixed. <https://blog.panic.com/the-future-of-unison/>

There is also Newslazer, although I've never tried it, so can't comment
on how good or otherwise it is.

I use Gnus on both macOS and Linux. It's a very powerful and flexible newsreader, but it does have a learning curve.

For newservers, eternal september is good and has been mentioned by
others already. Another good option is news.individual.net. It's not
free, but it's not very expensive, and it's quite reliable.

If you’re interested in a browser based client you could try newsgrouper. It’s still under development but shows promise.

I used to use NIN back when it was something else (was it cis.dfn.de?)
When they re-organized and became NIN, I subscribed for a couple of
years and then my needs changed a bit. I like having long retention now
so I can explore old articles in a wide variety of newsgroups. It's
worth it (to me) to subscribe to one of the larger NSPs like supernews, giganews, or usenetserver.

If that changes, I'm sure I'll go back to news.individual.net again.

I don't like NIN myself, they seem too anal retentive about their
rules. I used them a couple of times in the past and got kicked off
both times, I don't even remember why now.

Solani is good though, just as long as you remember to log in at least
once a month or they'll suspend your account and you have to register
    all over again.

Something strange about eternal-september though, on my older system I
use MT Newswatcher and when I launch it and then try to open a group
that has a large number of posts it takes forever for the posts to come
up. But when I switch servers to Solani, and then switch back to eternal-september the group with the large number of posts comes up
promptly. Maybe there's some rational explanation for this but I don't
know enough about Usenet servers to figure it out.
