I dunno. I guess some people really like the idea of managing a team.
You know, making the right decisions, not the stupid decisions the
    actual football managers are making.

I don't actually like football, so the game sounds very slightly more
interesting to me than an actual virtual football game.

Isn't that exactly the mentality behind all these fantasy football
    leagues?

Essentially, yes. It's basically the same game, 'except on a computer'
and with fancier graphics. Pick a team, 'hire' your favorite players,
then pit them against other virtual teams and play an imaginary
    season.

Footie management games just hide the spreadsheet aspects of
    fantasy-sports behind some glossier visuals.

I kinda disagree with that as the likes of football manager have a lot
more depth than a fantasy football league.

Although I think one of the draws to 'real' fantasy football was that
there was often an optional gambling mechanic behind it, where people
would pit their teams against others. I'm not sure Football Manager
    2024 has that feature ;-)

I think the real draw is it's free, generally, but the most important
one - your team consists of real players in a real league. If you like football it can just be seen as an extension to that. It's not as
popular as it once was but it's still going strong.

The gambling part, not sure about that, but most, even if it's run by
your local pub or just a group of friends, will have some sort of prizes.

Gambling itself, will that's become pretty synonymous with football now
and gambling firms have been very successful into integrating the idea
that part of watching football is also betting on it. I do go and watch
and I honestly don't understand that you have a number of people who buy
a ticket and then spend the whole match at the bookies in the ground
where you can't see the game.

Because that's where the drug dealer, excuse me, bookie is.

Oh good, another footie management sim. It can go right
there on the shelf next to my never-played copies of
    Football Manager 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023! I mean,
I guess the games are alright, but /managing/ a video-
game football team is even less interesting to me than
playing virtual footie, and that's a genre that's pretty
low on my lists of interests to begin with. Then again,
I drive virtual trucks, so who am I to judge?

    Heh. :)

Pretty much ditto for me minus driving virtual trucks.

Football Manager I haven't played since it was released on the Specky
48k. Virtual football, we used to play a lot of it on Saturday night. So
go to the pub, comeback and watch Match of the Day (a highlights show of
the day's football) and then on to Fifa International Soccer.

You forgot the opportunity for smugness when your team trounces your >>friends/bosses/etc's team.

Most likely also missing from the game.

Maybe it's just me, but fantasy sports gamers always seemed smug
/regardless/ of whether their team was winning or not. Like the very
fact that they were managing a fantasy sports team somehow made their
hobby superior to anything else people might be playing.

I always wanted to go up to them and say, "It's fuckin' D&D for
sports. You're as much of a nerd as the rest of us!" ;-)

Oh it's _vastly_ less than D&D, they are at best RPG-Lite, which is,
lets face it, all their jock wanna-be brains can handle.

"Sports" would be a lot more interesting with random encounters and a
    chance of Beholders.
