2 and 3 are crap, even for direct to video. The director of #2 was the
writer of #1 who played the criminal that got executed in it. #3 IIRC
was the second DP of one of the prior ones. #3 was one of those "We'll

Firstly, there's a demo for those not sure if it's for them: >https://store.steampowered.com/app/3062270/Empire_of_the_Ants__Demo/

Beyond that... well, the visuals are the game's biggest hook (and the
bugs, if you're into that sort of thing). But what little the trailers
show of the gameplay just doesn't look all that interesting. At best
it seems a rather humdrum RTS; some of its mechanics (riding a giant
snail? or leading armies of ants against armies of beetles?) seem
outright silly (and in direct opposition to the ultra-realistic theme
the visuals suggest), and apparently everything is done in
third-person mode, requiring you to shepherd your forces everywhere?

It just seems to lack any novelty or sophistication beyond its
graphics. I can't personally get excited about it.

The dumpsters have been sadly quite empty recently. I think the
building staff is on to me and hoarding the good stuff for themselves
inside rather than leaving it on curb.

Did your previous good stuff include good video cards though? :p

Actually, I once found a complete system with a GeForce 790GTX and an
i7 processor; it wasn't top-of-the-line stuff even at the time, but it
was still a pretty decent gaming rig.

Ha, that video card would handle this game well than my old card. ;P

(It also had its hard-drives complete with all the user data on it in unencrypted format. People really need to learn to wipe their drives
    before tossing their PCs)

Geez. Did you find anything good in their HDDs? ;)

    As to the game itself...

Firstly, there's a demo for those not sure if it's for them:
    https://store.steampowered.com/app/3062270/Empire_of_the_Ants__Demo/

So, you're not a RTS fan?

I play them. I enjoy them. They're not my favorite genre, but I don't
    dislike them in general.

I'm a bit less sanguine about action/strategy RTS games, where you
have to take on the role of one of the soldiers on the battlefield and
order your troops from a ground-level perspective. I find it messy and
overly complicated. Even though several games -- "Battlezone" (1998)
or "Hostile Waters: Anteaus Rising", for instance-- rose to prominence
based on the mechanic, I think a lot of their success came from the
novelty of the idea rather than its workability. It's a concept that
is better left in the dustbin of history, as far as I'm concerned. ;-)

So, you didn't like RTS games like Dune, C&C, WC, SC, AoE, etc. I love those. --

    Four Sequels.

Oh for fornication's sake. I've seen 2 and 3, when did 4 and 5 come out?

    The whole mess
    Starship troopers (1997)
Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation (2004 DTV)
Starship Troopers 3: Marauder (2008 DTV)
    Starship Troopers: Invasion (2012 Animated)
Starship Troopers: Traitor of Mars (2017 Animated)

I have not seen 4 and 5, but 2 and 3 were dreck.

4 & 5 were pretty bad too, but because they were animated, I gave them
more of a pass. They were more obviously aimed at the younger-set, so
the shallow characters, story and dialogue seemed more appropriate.
    The visuals were okay.

I wouldn't go out of my way to re-watch them, though. Frankly, the
entire movie franchise is pretty terrible.

(IMHO, obviously. It's all subjective. If you like the movies, good
for you; I'm glad you had more fun with them than I did!)

I read Heinlein's book 20+ years before the movie came out so I had more
    WTF's than popcorn watching it.

Just objectively though, assault rifles with them getting point blank
range made exactly zero sense, so enjoyment was simply not possible.

And of course NO FUCKING POWER ARMOR!

Did your previous good stuff include good video cards though? :p

Actually, I once found a complete system with a GeForce 790GTX and an
i7 processor; it wasn't top-of-the-line stuff even at the time, but it
was still a pretty decent gaming rig.

Ha, that video card would handle this game well than my old card. ;P

It was -still is- a quite capable system, despite it being over a
decade old at this point. Certainly it could handle a lot of my
mainstay games (<cough>Truck Simulators</cough>) well enough, and even
a lot of the more modern titles, if at reduced graphics levels. Which
says less about the power of the machine and more about the state of
    modern gaming.

But mostly I keep it around because it has easy-swap SATA bays which
makes it useful for whenever I need to test / wipe hard-drives. No
need to open up another computer, or fiddle around with external drive >chassis; I just slip the drive in the caddy and I'm good to go.

(It also had its hard-drives complete with all the user data on it in
unencrypted format. People really need to learn to wipe their drives
    before tossing their PCs)

Geez. Did you find anything good in their HDDs? ;)

Are you implying that I snooped around that hard-drive before doing
the proper thing and deleting the contents of the drive? Why, I never!
    ;-)

(but all sorts of stuff, including photos, scans of drivers license,
credit card numbers, documents with government ID, etc. Were I evil, I
could have done Bad Things with that information. DELETE YOUR DRIVES, >people!)

    Drills or thermite people.

Unrecoverability should be a point of pride!

I don't remember that during the rad 80s.

For people with both a bug-fetish AND an old-timey game fetish, the
original "Empire of Ants" game (released back in 2000) is now on sale
    too.
    https://www.gog.com/en/game/empire_of_the_ants_2000

From everything I've heard, the 2024 game is far superior but buy both
and make the comparison for yourself. ;-)

I got that first retail game for free from Microids back then. I don't
remember how and why, but hey. Too bad they won't give me this one. :-P Anyways, I remember it being pretty, but it was boring compared to other
RTS games! I'd rather replay SimAnt. :-P

Did anyone play 2024 version yet?
