I'm not sure if I'm jealous or not.
I never had an accoustical coupler but -at the time- it seemed the
height of technology. In fact, when I finally purchased a modem for my
8-bit, the lack of a coupler was a disappointment. Surely this
non-destinct slab of off-white plastic was an inferior brand! If only
had I one that mated directly with my phone, the experience and speeds
must be better, right?
[I was younger and had no idea of how modems worked]
For years, I lusted after getting a modem with a proper
accoustical coupler, and was continually disappointed that the only
ones I could find were, for some reason, rated for slower speeds than
what I already had. Obviously, the fast modems with accoustical
couplers were so rare and expensive that they never were sold in
ordinary shops. But maybe one day I'd get lucky and own a "real"
modem.
I never got one, and when eventually I learned that accoustical
couplers were actually the inferior technology, my desire for the
device faded away. But for the longest time, it was my holy grail.
Amongst modems, anyway.
I can't remember the speeds I connected at, back then. It was probably
a 1200 baud modem. I remember the characters appearing on screen, but
it seemed fast enough to me; then again, just the idea of streaming
data over the phone seemed almost magical. My typing skills back then
were minimal, though, so it was definitely faster than anything I
could put on screen! ;-)
They were optional not mandatory, and it didn't work out so well - 30
typewriters, over 50 students registered in class...
Wow, typewriters. What year was this? I remember taking typing classes
during my junior high/middle school days with Apple 2 computers.
The next year the school got some Commodore Pets.
Where is this? Not USA?
Oh gosh, it's Thursday. I am so behind on everything this week -you
may have noticed I've barely even had time for Usenet- that I'm
half-tempted to let somebody else do the usual announcement. But no,
what would the neighbors think if I skimped out on this vital duty? So
let's quickly cover this week's Epic freebie.
Epic, whatcha got for us today?
* The Spirit and the Mouse https://store.epicgames.com/en-US/p/the-spirit-and-the-mouse-42390b
At heart, this one is a third-person puzzle/narrative game;
not quite as simple as a walking-sim, not quite as difficult
as something like "Portal", but somewhere in the middle.
Still, it's a game more about atmosphere and story than it
is about challenge. It's also what some have termed a 'cozy'
game, with no real scare or threat; you're an adorable
little mouse whose life-goal is just to help people and make
a difference. It's very reminiscent of "Stray", in that
its biggest the cute fuzzy protagonist doing a lot of non-
threatening things. A deep game? A classic? No, but a fun
way to spend a brief few hours between more 'serious' titles.
I probably wouldn't ever pay for this, but as a freebie?
I approve.
Just the one game this week, but that's fine. So long as The Number--
grows and the game isn't terrible, I'm happy. Seven days is the number
of days you've got to claim; no more and no less. Six days only if the
first day has passed; eight days is right out. So I guess I'll see you
all in a week.
