    Says a recent report:

"Two third of total PC playtime last year was on games that are at
    least six years old"*

I'm sure this surprises nobody here; we're all old farts (well, most
of us anyway) and we naturally gravitate towards older games. But I
think it is indicative --and should be a loud warning-- to triple-A publishers that modern games -increasingly filled with 'live service' nonsense (and MTX and advertising and cross-promotions and all the
rest) are NOT satisfying the bulk of their customers. So, you know,
maybe stop doubling down on that?

Except... sales remain high so probably they don't care? After all, if
people are still BUYING the games, does it really matter if those
games actually get played? Then again, maybe it does. The newest games --overly expensive to develop-- absolutely depend on MTX and
live-services to keep the money-train going; the retail purchase price
is not enough for the publishers to recoup their investments. But if
gamers aren't playing these new games, then they aren't likely to pay
for the lootboxes or digital hats or pay-to-win trading cards either.

But what's a poor triple-A to do? Put in MTX and people don't buy your
game: end-result, no profit. Don't put in MTX and you don't make money
    and, again, no profit. It's a catch-22!

Unless --and this is a radical idea-- maybe you reign in the cost of
your games so they don't cost $400 million dollars to develop and
sell, and then you /can/ profit on just the retail price alone. It's
the one neat trick they don't want you to know!

The game industry is struggling, and it will have to change. The
question is, can the big-name triple-A companies adapt or will they
    spend themselves into obsolescence?

But 1/3 of PC Playtime is still a LOT of time. And I seem to recall
reading somewhere that the MTX-laden games rely on a small number of
"whales" who each individually pump a lot of money into the games they
play. So it doesn't matter if the AAA shit is a niche, the addicts of
that niche are extremely easy to milk, *ahem*, that is highly loyal and profitable customers.

Not quite the same but there was a study carried out in the UK looking a lootboxes. Something they found was that of those that purchase
lootboxes the top 5% account for about half of all revenue. Taking into
account that in my experience* the big spenders on lootboxes are also
big spenders in general then you can probably assume the total
expenditure on all MTX isn't that different.

The study has some quite interesting findings and well worth a read even
    if you only skim it.

*That comes from the World of Tank forums when you'd find the posters
saying they'd dropped £250 on lootboxes where also the ones who had
countless premium tanks (ones that you buy with real money). A good
example of this was a player who in six months had spent at least £1,000
just on premium tanks. The were also a good example of if the game is intentionally rigged in favour of big spenders, as it was common for
people to claim, then it didn't do it very well as they were in the
    bottom 5%.

NFS is arcade physics for sure. If you're struggling with Asetto, that's because it's Asetto. Race driving be hard.

At this rate, I figure that in another twenty years I will be playing

Never! Besides, if you do that, you'll want to be in the overtake lane.
(If that's the right lane because counterclockwise, my bad.)

We aren't the market any more. The PC Master Race is, in fact, dead.

Speak for yourself. I'm pining for the fjords.

Do I need to bang you on the table to prove otherwise? ;^)

The only "PC Master Race" that remains is competitive fps players who use
KBM and a ton of expensive, low-latency hardware to pwn people who are
less serious than them about winning. For reasons. I don't identify with
    it.

The rest of us simply like to play games on our computers. We've all
accepted our own seasoned senescence. We've adjusted and accept the
    gaming market as it is.

Except you. You still rant about EA. Nothing wrong with a little "get off
    my lawn" excursion. :^P

More seriously, while I think to some degree what you say is true, I
think it also ignores a lot of the changes made in the past ten years
too. (that mention of 'geeks vs normies also feels like gatekeeping).

It wasn't intended to be gatekeeping. The normies get to game too. The
gate is unlocked. The hounds have been shot. Everyone has unfettered
access to what we considered to be "our" property, as it should be.

The time of gatekeeping is long past.

It is intended as a simple statement that we are no longer the market.
The days of Infocom text adventures are over, for multiple reasons. But particularly because the general gaming audience has grown, and the
audience for that sort of taste is now a microscopic sliver of a niche.

I am also saying that I am not statistically normal. I'm several
deviations away. I am now a minority, niche customer to an industry that
has sensibly targeted the fatter middle of the curve.

I don't begrudge anyone a good time, nor think less of them for buying an annual copy of "The Show 20xx." Hell, I have a copy of The Show 2022.

    [snip]

True, the triple-A studios continue to push pabulum, but that's less
to cater specifically to 'normies' (and not the 'intelligent
tech-oriented player') but instead that they have to cater to the
    widest possible audience.

Please note that I didn't say consumers of "pabulum" games were
unintelligent, and that we are somehow "intelligent and savvy" customers
in contrast. My argument is not intended to be elitist, though my glib
language may have come off that way.

I said it doesn't cater to that *particular kind of intelligence*. Specifically, the kind that makes one a computer geek. To be perfectly
blunt, probably somewhere on the autistic spectrum or close to it. There
are all sorts of intelligences, but that kind of hyper-rational, detail-oriented, fine analytic mind that can "actually play the original
Bard's Tale and complete the game with only graph paper, moxy, and a high tolerance for tedium" is no longer the audience. Hell, some of those grid
based RPGs were so obnoxiously tedious and frustrating that *we* still
complain about them to this day.

And that geekly audience is tiny, and it is no longer served by anything
other than tiny developers who don't tend to make a lot of money at it.

The problem isn't so much who
specifically they are appealing but rather that their projects are so >expensive to develop that they can't afford to make a game that only a
small niche would enjoy. Smaller developers have that luxury (and so
would the triple-A's if they dared consider the benefits of more
    numerous, smaller titles).

    ^This. 100%

And, honestly, while there were a host of early-2000s games that were >absolutely terrible and catered to the "frat-bro" mentality (yeah, I'm >looking right at you, "Gears of War"!), there were an equal number of >terrible geek-oriented games in the 1990s that are just as
cringeworthy. Frankly, the game industry desperately needed to break
out of that niche, and I think nowadays is much better for it (Geeks
can be just as offensively stupid outside of their particular niches
as 'normies'). There's a much wider spectrum of viewpoints being
offered these days than ever before, and I'm grateful for it... even
if some of them aren't of any interest to me.

Note, I said the shift began around Blackthorne (1994).

    https://www.mobygames.com/game/1445/blackthorne/

I set that game up for a kid and his father (an MBA), neither of which
knew how to properly configure their very expensive computer system. All
I did for them was correct the soundcard's base address and IRQ. They
    expected a Nintendo.

That kind of paradigmatic shift takes *time*. By 2000, as you mention,
Windows 98 had come, plug-and-play was reliable, and they no longer
needed me to set it up. This turnkey accessibility accelerated the growth
of audiences, but didn't yet dwarf ours as one, so we still got the games
    we expected and wanted.

[There is no small amount of irony in my tone when I say "normies,"
anyway. So here is your winkie ---> ;^)]

But what can I say, I'm an ultra-geek myself and own an IDIC medallion
    ;-P

I don't go that far, but I have a Fallout Charisma bobblehead.
Personally, I've always straddled the lines between technical
intelligence and emotional/social intelligence, making me even weirder
    than all y'alls.

Is this a real thing people used or just an example?

In the dark corners where I came from? Occasionally used for real, but
really just funny stuff that circulated back in the day. It satirized how banal flaming had become.

If used for real, the gist of it was "I don't have time for you so please accept this form." So, as a double kick in the nuts. "Not only am I
flaming you, I am flaming you with a form letter."

Yes. People put X-es in the appropriate boxes.

    I would!

Trolling in old Usenet was a real art. These days many people will

were seriously wishing a discussion while still managing to aggravate
    nearly everyone in the newsgroup.

Very much so, trolling in general now is very much low grade and often
gets no more creative than, no that's your mum that is. The art of
trolling is to slowly reel people in and the don't realise it's happened
    until to late.

The meaning of troll has also change so now people will call someone a
troll when they aren't but instead just obnoxious. Another one that
wasn't uncommon on the World of Tanks forum, merely disagreeing with
someone could get you labelled a troll. The worst thing was there was a moderator who basically went along with that and seemed to think that it
was disruptive (their words not mine) if you wouldn't allow people to
state their opinions, however ridiculous, unchallenged. They seem to not understand what a forum was. Then again they also believed they had a
spirit guide called Jesus of Nazareth.

    LOL!

It has been a long time since anyone here made this kind of complaint.
You really should just be happy this newsgroup is as active as it is.

But if it still bothering you, maybe Spalls can rescue the thread. He
once turned a completely off topic thread about cooking and microwave
ovens back on topic to remembering microwave ovens in video games.

Sure, but the original post was about a World of Tanks forum, and while
I don't think much of "World of Tanks", it definitely is a game and thus
I'd say it's on-topic. My vaunted powers to redirect threads will remain unused in this case ;-)

... Although now I'm wondering how many video games have in-game representations of online forums in them... I know I've seen a few. I
think "Alpha Protocol" had one on a computer you hacked (it was just a non-functional screen-grab) but I'm pretty sure I've seen others. Oh,
and there was a forum in "Uplink" too, I think! Arguably, GTA5 had one
as well (although I think it was more of a Twitter rip-off)

_Spycraft_ had you actually finding and decoding messages found
    in Usenet headers.

I play more old games because modern big budget games do not appeal to

around the year 2000 or so. I don't think it is their fault. It is
    just a personal preference thing.

For me it was probably around the 2010's. Like you part of it was my
taste in games was changing but I also felt that big budget games were
    become a bit samey.

Yah. I remember trying to beat R-Type in mame a few years ago. It wasn't
that hard to get to level 5 or 6 of the eight levels when I was 17 but
now... And the emulator lets me even save the game but even with save scumming I wasn't getting through level 4.

I can't remember which level I ended up getting stuck on but I found the
hard bit was once you got to a new level you knew there would a part
that was very trial-and-error to get your moves right as it was as much
a puzzle as a shooter. One mistake and you lost all your weapons and
were basically screwed. So another 10p and start from level one to try
again. I still loved the game though.

Same thing with other arcade games. I was never that good in Gravitar
for example but now I suck. And some games seem aggressively hard, it's
not how I remember them at all. I suspect time travelers :)

I have vague recollections of Gravitar, looked lovely, the concept was
fun but it was just too hard so frustrating more than fun. Thrust on the
Specky 48k was a similar concept but the difficultly level was much better.

"You're a troll and you're not trolling right?"

Pardon me but I reject the label 'troll'.  Trolling is only a final
recourse when negotiation has failed.  It's basically a way to trash on
a group that has been recalcitrant and selfish.

I enjoy conversation - does that make me a troll?  I've been called
random before - does that make me a troll?  I talk about old games on an
old games thread and crosspost to allow my mate to see some of the ones
I like - does that make me a troll?  I crossposted to here and rec.food.cooking about carrying a P-90 into a special ed classroom two
groups I can avoid if I have to and let it play out - that makes me a
    troll.

But I'm not doing that right now as we are having a conversation.

However, there is an old CRPG called Phantasie, where I do believe you

Not strictly the protag, but BG3's companions are trolling hard.

Wyll is definitely trolling me. I romanced him, forsaking Shadowheart in
the process. He demanded complete monogamous fealty, and then he doesn't
put out. All I've gotten out of him is a few stolen kisses, well into
Chapter III. I feel like I've been Rick Rolled.

Shadowheart, otoh, was eager (but not there yet). Lae'zel put out for no
reason after we defeated the goblins.

And Astarion just fucking killed me because he has no self-control.

And of course, the trolls are trolling, but that's just their nature. The
last one I met said that BG3 is not a "true RPG."

    I ignored the obvious bait.

The protag can, of course, always make the decision to troll, but I've
been playing it pretty straight (excepting Wyll) so far.
