From Mark Wade@21:1/5 to All on Sun Jan 5 16:00:27 2025
    Hey Folks,

I can't seem to mount 5.25 disk images using Kegs on a MacBook. 3.5 and HD images okay, Dyna Pro okay. I'm trying to mount an image of Shape Mechanic, also a test 5.25 image created with Kegs but that doesn't mount either. Any thoughts?

Also, how does one create 5.25 disk images with an Apple II? I have working Disk ]['s and a 5.25 drive on a IIgs. The only images I've made are HD
images using Bernie II Rescue on a PowerBook 3400C. I think, years ago.

    Thanks for any help,

Interestingly, maybe: I mapped a folder to ,s6,d2 with DynaPro and while it doesn't mount on the desktop I can access it from Basic.System and
AppleWorks. I can't access the 143k disk image mapped to ,s6,d1 though., setting the prefix results in "Path not found".

I can get around this by copying the files I need to a directory, a bit
round about, but I'd like to be able to create these images and mount them.

KEGS currently enforces the rule that .dsk images MUST be in DOS3.3 sector order. In general, emulators cannot determine in all cases the sector
order of an image. However, other emulators make an effort to guess the
sector order, and so they "work", and KEGS doesn't.

The fix is easy. Rename SHAPE.MECHANIC1.dsk to SHAPE.MECHANIC1.po (same with any other image). Then it should work. This doesn't exactly match what you said, but it's likely the root of the problem.

    I'm sure I misunderstood.

I did notice my physical IIgs has a 5.25 drive icon on the desktop with no
    such icon with Kegs.

Thanks Kent for the reply but that doesn't do it. Kegs doesn't mount the
143k disk it created either. I also tried changing that t foo.po and no go. Does that rhyme?

Check to make sure that the AppleDisk5.25 drivers haven't been disabled.
If you can see them from BASIC.SYSTEM then that is most likely the
problem. The Finder isn't even looking for 5.25" disks if the driver is disabled.

I think I misunderstood what your problem is, so let's ignore disk sector order. KEGS supports ProDOS and DOS3.3 (and none-of-the-above) disk images.

What do you mean by "KEGS doesn't mount the 143k disk it created either"?
How are you mounting the images? When it doesn't mount, how can you tell?
Are you using the F4->Disk Configuration screen while KEGS is running, or
are you manually editing config.kegs? Are you doing something different
when trying to mount 3.5" disks?

I used the "New image" option from the Disk Configuration screen. The AppleDisk5.25 driver was marked inactive (thanks Jeff Blakeney) so when I activated that and restarted, Finder said it didn't recognize the disk and asked to format it which I did and now it shows up on the desktop fine.
Only have one 5.25 drive icon though. When I get home tonight I'll have to check my system disks and see if there is a second driver that needs to be installed?.

Kent, thank you for the excellent emulator. I had been lugging around an
old PowerBook to run Bernie. It's very much nicer being able to use my
MacBook Pro when I want to fool around with the IIgs.

    Thanks, Mark

I had to change the subtype of the 5.25 driver to $010E which I found
something Neil Parker had posted here I think some time ago though that
isn't where I found it. I must have changed it years back to get rid of the second drive icon.

    So, that's all good now.

Jeff, thank you. Yes the driver was checked inactive. I had replied to
thank you earlier but the post never showed up <shrug>. In addition I had to change the auxtype to $010E to get the second drive working as per Neil
Parker. I must have changed it years ago to get rid of the second drive.

So, thanks again and sorry if the first reply shows up after all
