Solaris 11 does not utilise flars, the new feature is Unified Archive.

    https://docs.oracle.com/cd/E37838_01/html/E60984/gmwen.html
    man archiveadm

It akes a little bit to get your head around after so many years of
flash archive use, but after a shaky start it has become very useful and efficient.

If you want to use/play with S11, get S11.4 Common Build Environment. https://www.oracle.com/solaris/solaris11/downloads/solaris-downloads.html

Now, back to the content which is mentioning S10 with S9 branded zone.

That is just a case of installing S10 and then installing a S9 flar into
    an S10 branded zone.

S11 does not support S9 branded zones, so you need to stick with S10 for that.

I have S10 installed in an ldom on S11.3 (my T2000 does not support
S11.4+) with the intent of doing exactly what you wrote above. The flar currently sits on the S11 side and I was curious what was in it before installing.

Thank you for the UA link.

Ah, you want to extract it 1st?

    IIRC, it is

    flar split -f

But only on S10 and no flar command in S11
