• Remote KVM

From Joe Makowiec@21:1/5 to All on Thu May 8 16:15:35 2025
I admin three Linux boxes, all of which are on the most recent version of Fedora. At any given time, two are remote and one is local. Fedora did a version update in mid-April, which I did on all three servers via DNF,
using Fedora's instructions. Normally, this is a trouble-free procedure.

This time, two of the servers came up just fine. However, the third one -
and you guessed it, it was one of the remotes - didn't. It was five days
until I had access to it. When I got to it, it was running, but needed a
Ctrl^D to put it into the proper mind to come up and make itself
available. Since then, it has rebooted just fine.

Since it was relatively simple to get it working again, I figure that if
I had KVM access to it, I could have brought it up immediately. So I
started searching the web. Unfortunately, what I came up with ranged from
about US$15 to several thousands of dollars. I assume that the higher end
ones are for server farms which run hundreds of servers in a room.
However, it looked like the lower-end solutions were for use on a couple
of boxes within the same facility.

What I need is something which will allow KVM connection from anywhere
via the internet for just one (or a few) machine. Any suggestions?

Quite a few rPi-based or similar remote KVMs have appeared in the last
year or so, have a look at Jeff Geerling's youtube channel ...

The second link has complete packaged units but they're pricey. There are
    a couple of DIY plans:

Are you sure that you need KVM access? Maybe a serial console is
enough? Even without a server mainboard, you can control the entire
process starting with grub, even if the Firmware doesn't support
    serial itself.
