• Transferring files between Android and Windows

From Stan Brown@21:1/5 to All on Wed May 7 20:50:34 2025
Apologies if someone has already posted about this; in that case I
    must have missed it.

Localsend (free and open source) lets you transfer files between
devices that are on the same Wifi LAN. I've seen and tried many other solutions, but this is the first one that actually worked for me. (I
    tried transfers in both directions.)

    https://github.com/localsend/localsend/releases/tag/v1.17.0

You load the app on your phone (I found it in the Google Play Store)
and the appropriate version from the above link on your computer.
Yes, you can have more than two devices with Localsend, though I
didn't test that. Each install creates a device identifier name that
is unique to Localsend, to identify the sending device to the
    receiver and vice versa.

You need to have Localsend actually running on both devices involved
in the transfer. A nice feature is that in Android when you have a
picture, you can just tap the Share icon and the picture will appear
in Localsend. I transferred a couple of pictures that were a few
hundred K each, and the transfer was instantaneous.

Thanks for letting people know about LocalSend for transferring files
between Windows and Android, whether you're sitting at Android or Windows.

If anyone wants to know if a topic has been covered this search engine will find all the newer topics since google stopped archiving this newsgroup.
    <https://www.novabbs.com/computers/search.php?group=comp.mobile.android>

    a. Enter "localsend" into the "Search Terms" field
    b. Perhaps change the radio dials from "Body" to "Subject"
    c. And then you can tell instantly whether it has been covered before

Only having found out about LocalSend from the Windows newsgroup a month
ago, in my tests (admittedly only with iOS) some of the genius involved is
    A. The only thing you need is both devices with LocalSend on the LAN
    B. You can transfer from device to device (e.g., Android to Android)
    C. It's just about hands down the easiest way to transfer with iOS

Having said that, if you have a Windows PC, there are *plenty* of ways to
copy files between Android & Windows where LocalSend is just one of them.

    Thanks for letting everyone know.
It's the right thing to do to help everyone you can.

I suspect Stan has me filtered so this may not go to him unless others
respond with the quotes as I do very much appreciate that he sent this.

Also good to know about. I've saved most groups for years and can look locally, but the search terms here are more versatile I think. The link

You conclude that from a zero number of tutorials. How ridiculous.

Another example is how much political garbage do you post to a.h.r, Micky? >Point being every post from you, micky, adds negative value to the group.

AHR is another group. I don't like it but at a time when there were few
home repair posts, we were invaded by political spammers, and I
responded to some of them, for a time, until I decided the spammers were hopeless. I only find posts from you starting the middle of march and I
have not read any of them. It's possible to hold a middle-position or to
try to moderate between two other sides, but that doesn't seem like you.
So if your views in those threads were different from mine, you were
probably wrong. ;-) If they were the opposite of mine, you were
    surely wrong. :>)

I have at least 3 friends whose views on politics are the opposite or
nearly so on the major issue of politics these days, and I don't
belittle them and they don't belittle me. You could learn from us.

Ivo did all the hard work but I created the tiny urls to make his links >easier to everyone to use without needing to even have to think about it.

    That's because.... I think.

You're mixing up the means you used with the purpose. The means you
used was thinking. "Because" refers to purpose.

It's not because you think You did it because you wanted the
convenience of these links and you wanted to be able to brag about them
    here.

    They do not.

This is the part that makes you look bad. Are you the one who under
another name was always saying how you did things for other people.
Marion doesn't say that, but there is a similarity here, so maybe you
    are the same person.

To say that once would be reasonable. People are entitled to brag once
in a while, but that guy would put in almost every thread and I felt a
little sorry that he needed those self-aggrandizing remarks.

But I didn't say anything because bragging is not so bad, and even when
there is an implied contrast with other people -- I forget how you said
it but you implied, or maybe you were explicit, that other people did
not do things for other people -- I figured it wouldn't help so I said
nothing. Of course everyone reading knows that that view, that other
people are not helpful, is only your mistaken opinion. Part of the goal
of everyone who answers questions here is to help other people. How can
    you not realize that?

If you're the same person who posted those things, and yet when you
changed to Marion, you stopped, that's encouraging.

But when you make a flat out statement, that other people do not think,
that is just so silly, I thought it worth posting in rebuttal.

That's why these URLs work, Micky.

I don't care if the urls work or not. And didn't someone post that he
tried it for another ng and it did not work?

    It's not because of them.

You think 100 people should all write the same urls?

Hence your claim that anyone who "does something"... is mere bluster...

I didn't say that. Not even close. If you were thinking you'd know that
what you just wrote and what I said are not even close to the same. Read
the top of this post where I restored what you had snipped, so readers
would not know what I actually said, or read my prior post, and you'll
see what I said. Saying that you think and others do not is bluster, and
it's unbecoming. No one believes you. On Usenet that doesn't matter
so much but if you are like this in the rest of your life, it could be a
    real problem.

means that you're squarely in the category of people who do not think.

I did not say that, but even if I had, your conclusion does not follow.
Even people who think make errors once in a while. You do too, and two
examples are that you just misquoted me AND that you don't know how bad
you look when you claim that others don't think, or that they don't do
    things for other people.

Please think about that clear & rational observation before responding.

Do you think someone you believe doesn't think can actually do that?

OTOH, we know that you think, so you can please think about my clear &
    rational observation before responding.

It is unbecoming for you to insult the rest of the world by saying they
do not think. Even if you were right, unless there were some need to say
it, it would be tasteless, but since you're so, so wrong, it's very
    unbecoming.

So what was the situation before you came up with your schema?

That is a good question, where I'll spell out some history below for you.

You bring up a good point that there was always the google groups URL even before I came up with the schema of simply tinyurl + comp-mobile-android.

The original google groups URL for comp.mobile.android was this one.
    <https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/comp.mobile.android>

That's what it was when I created the first tinyurl for it years ago.
    <tinyurl+comp-mobile-android> (you can't use dots)

It still is, actually, but only momentarily as it then switches to
    <https://groups.google.com/g/comp.mobile.android>
Which I asked Google to change many years ago - and whether or not they did
it as a result of my request, I don't know - but they eventually did it.

Then they stopped updating it when they were getting spammed to death.
Those updates stopped on February 22nd, 2024 (as far as I can recall).

So then I asked RetroGuy if he'd make archives to take over where Google
left off, and he did it, but his links are horribly complex as you know.
    <https://www.novabbs.com/computers/search.php?group=comp.mobile.android>

I asked him to make them easier to remember but he told me it was enough
work just to make the archive - and that people can save them, as you do.

Since I'm all about using our brain instead of our keyboard, I made this:
    <http://tinyurl.com/nova-comp-mobile-android>
