Have you set it up using CUPs?
I think you may be using an incorrect CUPs configuration. I have the same issues with my Brother printer. You may need to dig around the internet
for a proper configuration. It's a pain
Often times with your symptoms is a missing or corrupted printer filter
on the backend, try:
sudo apt-get install printer-driver-escpr
or if exists try reinstalling it, then try resetting up printer.
