Just finished the 8 first seasons and the original movie and the second one just now.

I went into IMDB to read the reviews and most everyone is pretty meh on the movie and I don't understand why... personally I found it immensely enjoyable and it had sort of a Silence of the Lambs vibe. I loved seeing a little older Mulder and Scully living as a couple, Scully predictably having moved on with her medical career and Mulder being Mulder.

Seems to me fans were disappointed the movie didn't pick up immediately on
the main story and instead went for a "side mission" so to speak, I think
that was a smart move, they needed to reintroduce the characters to the mainstream audience and instead of picking up a convoluted story that needed a lot of context after a 6 years absence they instead chose to reintroduce just the main characters in a more personal story.

We get to see their drama, relationship and personal growth (or lack thereof) after being gone for so long, we got a story that dealt with Scully's faith and her relationship with corrupt institution and how she may not like what Mulder is but that's what made her fall in love with him and we got to see the old, obsessive Mulder being a sarcastic smartass with a deadpan delivery and risking alienating everyone but staying three steps ahead.

While I kinda understand why fans didn't love it I personally did, it felt
like meeting old friends... you know despite me being on a nonstop X-Files marathon!

The major criticism of this movie seems to be that it was just a "monster of the week." But frankly, that's what the X-Files did best; the larger plot was, in hindsight, really never very good, as evidenced by the many unsuccessful (and indeed, increasingly bad) attempts to write satisfying conclusion to it over the course of 20 years.

So while it does seem odd to me that they resurrected the franchise for this movie that ultimately felt like it could well have just been another episode of the show, had it been, it would probably have been remembered as a very good episode. And so it should be today.
