• Modem Dialin

From Gary Perkins@RICKSBBS to All on Mon Feb 19 23:50:00 2007
I *think* I got Synchronet and Argus set up correctly for a dialin. Unfortunately, I don't know anyone with a computer, modem, and landline phone anymore... (the wife and I work 50hrs a week, plus kids...not much time for friends these days)
I wonder if anyone can try dialing in? Hoping some of you out there have a similar setup to me...free long distance thanks to digital phone service...
    :)

If not, it's cool...waiting on a cable to come in for my cell phone...hopefully this one's like my old Motorola, with modem capability...

    The number's (409)548-0637.

People should use phone cards. They only cost $20 and last 6 months. A 2
minute phone call shouldn't kill them.

Yeah, I just always hate askin' people to dial long distance if it's gonna cost 'em any money. Some people are pretty picky about that..

Well perhaps later today after I get my food shopping done I'll hook up my
old 33.6 modem and try it.

I tested your modem and it connects and siaplays a message saying "press esc
to enter Southeast Texas Bbs", but then sits for 20 secs or so and drops.
    Tried it twice.

Oh I can relate there. That's why I started buying phone cards for that exact same reason.

No, I'd found some instructions for using Argus, but I've never configured anything like this before. It's been a bit confusing. I didn't have a
chance tonight to do much with it, but I did find a virtual null modem
driver. I'll probably try installing that tomorrow, it's supposed to allow a terminal emulator to virtually attach to a BBS, if I read the description right. Exactly what I need to test this thing out. I believe it was called com0com (I *knew* I'd seen something out there before...looked for days,
guess I wasn't using the right search keywords...).

I'll let y'all know if something happens and I still need help... My guess is I'm not using the dialuptotelnet program right, or misconfigured Argus...

Well if you're running a dialup bbs I recommend Frontdoor. It's easy and
quite colorful too. As for the null modem driver is it easy to find? If not, can I get it off you? You can email it to me.

Yeah, he may either need to run the DOS version of Synchronet alongside the Windows version or he may need to run a dialup-to-telnet program to allow dialup access to his BBS. ASAIK, Sychronet/Win32 does not have built-in modem capabilities.

It doesn't, but I've written a Win32 program to do this (answer a modem and route the call to a TCP/Telnet server) and will be making it available for
    beta testing soon.

Are you trying to set up Synchronet 3.x as a dialup system as well as a teln system?

yeah.. had it all working, too, in the end, but I already took it back
down, cuz we've had a lot of crap happening that's costing us money, and we need to go ahead and kill the digital phone, cell phones, and so on.

I will probably get it back up someday. The wife can't live the life our income says we should; if we have five bux left at the end of the week,
she'll spend it on sodas rather than save it, as an example. Forget about
any kind of budgeting, saving for emergencies, and oh sorry, didn't know the gas hadn't been paid in three months. And so on.
I guess she's getting tired of my griping. She told me tonight she doesn't think she loves me anymore, and is thinking about seperating. I didn't shed any tears, told her I'd help her figure out what's going on, help her plan
the seperation if that's what she wants, etc. She said she doesn't want to hurt me. I told her she'd done done that for a long time. :p
Guess this means I have to get a job while taking college. Since I won't have to constantly clean up after her, this should be doable, if we split!

I had actually set up dialup-to-telnet and argus, but mistyped a setting in argus at that time...I had it corrected for a while until I've been forced to take the dialup down.
I figure at least I *have* to have Internet now for Devry Online, else this would be going, too!
