• Vegan soap?

From Mike Powell@CAPCITY2 to ALL on Sat Jul 13 10:23:00 2024
I was reading the label on some fancy soap yesterday. The label mentions
that the soap is VEGAN? That got me wondering, do vegans eat soap, or has washing a kid's mouth out with soap as a punishment for foul language come
    back into fashion?

I believe that harkens back to the days when soap was made with vats of boiling fat and lye. Placing a "vegan" label on things has just become the trendy thing to do. I've seen it on juice bottles and wondered what fruit juice "isn't" vegan, so I can stay away from it.

you should assume that soap contains animal ingredients unless it says it does not. lard or tallow in hard soaps. or derivatives

Sort of what I figured, I just thought it was funny. If someone is vegan because they are concerned about animal cruelty, knowning that your soap doesn't likely contain any animal byproducts is probably important.

I also agree, if there is any fruit juice that isn't vegan, I would also
    rather steer clear. ;)

As a seller of soap, I agree.

But then lots of modern high-end soap is made using vegetable fats. Obviously, the donkey milk soap has donkey milk. I love that soap, by the way. It is a socially acceptable way of having equine odor on yourself :-P

I think there is an unhealthy fixation with the lack of animal ingredients from self-professed animal lovers. I am the official animal hugger everywhere I go and I don't find it troublesome that something is made of milk or eggs of whatevre. What really makes a difference is how that stuff was produced.

I mean, my hens live in a very big yard full of bushes they can run around or hide under. There is a hen farm half a mile from here with a vast amount of free range hens that have a nice quality of life. The cows they usually keep grazing near my main horseyard are very well kept. They also range quite freely, and I'd say they live better than I.

Most farms I have ever visited keep their animals well. They are also
keeping most of them for eventual slaughter, which may be where the rub
    comes from for animal lovers.
