• Mutil PostTextFiles for QWK Networks

    From codefenix@21:2/150 to All on Sun Nov 24 11:11:55 2024
    Is the PostTextFiles capability in mutil supposed to work with QWK networks? I have it set up to post my add to DOVE-Net. It indeed posts the message locally, and I can see it trigger the qwkpoll event, however I don't see the message show up on other BBSes that carry DOVE-Net (such as my main board).

    This is what my PostTextFiles section in mutil.ini looks like (with totalfiles=3 and this is the 3rd file to be auto-posted):

    file3_name = dc-ad.ans
    file3_baseidx = 5
    file3_from = codefenix
    file3_to = All
    file3_subj = [ANSI] dawnCHAOTIC
    file3_addr = 0:0/0
    file3_delfile = false

    I wonder if file3_addr is the issue. I've tried several different things here, like the name of the network (VERT), my own qwk ID (DCHAOTIC), and they all seem to lead to the same outcome of not actually sending the message out.

    FYI, I haven't seen anything posted by you in the Dovenet -
    Advertisements echo. However, I see advertisements posted by other
    Mystic systems in there, so I doubt it's a Mystic issue.

    When 'it triggers the qwkpoll event' do you actually see your system
    connect to VERT in the logs and see a packet leave your system successfully?

    I wouldn't think the address would matter, as that's not a QWK thing. If anything, 0:0/0 would probably be the correct setting there. Anything
    posted locally, including auto-posts, to your Dovenet areas should be
    sent to VERT if everything is setup correctly between you and the QWK hub.

    Are any of your other messages posted to Dovenet getting out? Maybe
    there's a configuration error somewhere that would affect more than just
    the messages you're trying to auto-post..?

    Regards,
    Nick

    Yes, I do see the connections taking place in the qwkpoll.log. However, something I failed to notice until today is the log does not contain any "Exported @VERT.rep -> x msgs" lines with a timestamp which would coincide with the times when mutil ran. The only lines showing 1 or more messages exported are for the few messages I posted manually.

    Not sure whether I'm on the right track, but I decided to try disabling the "Send QWK network mail" semaphore event in the Event Editor, and instead just run the "Poll QWK netowrk" event hourly. After making this change, I tried running mutil again to post the ad. When the event ran at the top of the hour, I did indeed see "Exported @VERT.rep -> 1 msgs" in qwkpoll.log. So I think I might be making progress (?), event though I haven't seen the message appear in the network yet (maybe it takes a bit to flow through Vert).

    There may have been some kind of QWK bug in A48. If possible, upgrade to
    the latest alpha and see if enabling the semaphore event works
    afterwards. If not, feel free to post the event to verify it's correct.

    Looks like you're on the right track now. I see an ad from you posted

    That is indeed when my auto-posts last ran. However, that's probably actually the ad for ConstructiveChaos, my Sync board. If there isn't also one for dawnCHAOTIC shortly after, then I still have some QWK problem I need to sort out.

    I'll take you advice and look out for a new alpha version. Or maybe I'll just post them from my Sync board since I know that works. :D

    Thanks for your time looking at this with me!

    Ah, you're right. There was no ad for "dawnCHAOTIC" that I can see.

    No need to keep a look out.

    Make sure to read the whatsnew.txt to make sure it's a seamless upgrade from your version to the current one, or if there are steps you need to take to do so. Hopefully it's as easy as running the upgrade executable or whatever it was.

    Thanks for your time looking at this with me!

    Of course! No problem at all.

    For the record, I saw an advertisement for your Mystic board in Dovenet this morning, during my newscan.

    Not sure what you did differently, but it looks like your origin line is FTN based (a QWK origin line wouldn't have "(0:0/0)" at the end of it). So maybe that's a good spot to take a look for any configuration issues, too.

    Thanks for confirming! I saw it from my Sync board as well.

    Yes, that does make sense. 0:0/0 was a dummy value I put in the file1_addr while troubleshooting, and I'll change this for the next post.

    The only other thing I did differently was make a small edit to the message file itself, so I wonder if there's some duplicate checking logic that was keeping the old message from being exported. I'll see what happens next time.

    Thanks again!

    Ah, got it. I assume file1_addr is something in mutil.ini? I'd guess you can probably blank that out for a QWK networked post. Otherwise, in "mystic -cfg" > Editors > Message Base Editor under the "Network" header, all of your Dovenet areas should be labeled "QwkNet". If they're not, and show 0:0/0 instead, that may be the issue.

    Sure. That, or you actually did send it out and VERT (although I thought you originally said it wasn't going out at all? I don't remember now, lol) caught it as a dupe. Either way, looks like you have it working a bit better now!
