Remembering my experience with those videos (and clearly they're still useful, despite the years that have passed since Avon released them), there's one thing you might not be aware of:
That /999 address is a way to get things going quickly. But the next person who watches those videos will _also_ use that address, and if they check before you do, their BBS will get those messages, not yours.
So you'll want to apply for your very own node number.
And I believe Avon still handles that, though you might end up on one of the other subnets, rather than the one he runs, as there are a couple of other people helping do the work of keeping FSXnet running.
