I basically copied the wiki to see if I can get this to work. Not successful at all. As you can see, I can connect but it won't get the messagebase. Here is my log of the transaction.

Do you have a message area configured in SCFG->Message Areas with an internal code of USENET_ALLSYSOP? If not, then you need to create that first. Step 3 at https://wiki.synchro.net/module:newslink

From looking at the next-to-last line above, my guess is that you
haven't defined what newsgroups you want, with the 'AREA' keyword in
your ../ctrl/newslink.cfg file; and/or you haven't defined that message
    area name in SCFG.

    Yes.
    Long Name: alt.bbs.allsysop
    Short Name: alt.bbs.allsysop
    Internal Code: USENET_ALLSYSOP
    Newsgroup Name: alt.bbs.allsysop

Just like step 3 in wiki.synchro.net/module:newslink

    My newslink.cfg has:

    AREA USENET_ALLSYSOP alt.bbs.allsysop nb /home/sbbs/sbbs/data/dirs/sysop

I have. I only have the one as I am testing. but this is the AREA line:

    AREA USENET_ALLSYSOP alt.bbs.allsysop nb /home/sbbs/sbbs/data/dirs/sysop

I basicall cut and pasted what was in the wiki. The only thing different,
was I took out the "i" in the newslink.cfg example.

    My newslink.cfg has:

    AREA USENET_ALLSYSOP alt.bbs.allsysop nb /home/sbbs/sbbs/data/dirs/sysop

Are you sure that's the internal code? If the sub-board is in a library with an "internal code prefix", that prefix is automatically added, so I want to make sure you don't actually have a internal code such as USENET_USENET_ALLSYSOP or some other madness.

One way to check/confirm this is with the 'exportcfg.js' script, e.g.:

    jsexec exportcfg msg-subs -grp=USENET
    ...
    3 4 127 4 USENET usenet_allsysop
    ...

    as an example.

You should not have any FTN address visible in there. In the Network
Options for those USENET sub-boards, you need to have the "Internet (UUCP/NNTP)" choice set to YES, and the "FidoNet Echomail" set to NO.

Did you try running it via jsexec as I've shown?

    This is what I got:

    sub: USENET_ALLSYSOP, newsgroup: alt.bbs.allsysop
    USENET_ALLSYSOP.ini export ptr: 0
    USENET_ALLSYSOP.ini import ptr: -9223372036854775808
    alt.bbs.allsysop import ptr: -9223372036854775808, first_msg: 756, last_msg: 758

    So I guess it working?

Yes. At least jsexec is recognizing that sub-code. So I'm guessing you haven't recycled your terminal server (where the event thread runs) since adding that sub in SCFG, so it hasn't reloaded the msgs.ini file to "know" about. Normally, servers automatically reload when saving changes in SCFG, so you should look into that, if that's the problem.

The other possibility is that you have multiple ctrl directories with different msgs.ini files in one. The msgs.ini file that jsexec loaded obviously has the USENET_ALLSYSOP sub-board in it, while the one loaded by sbbs (if different) does not.

And then there's that import ptr. That's not normal. Take a look at the data/subs/usenet_allsysop.ini file (should be lowercase). Is there an import_ptr defined in there? I'm not sure what would cause that crazy value - I'd normally expect it to start at (default to) 0.
