I think he thinks we're all depraved men in soiled sweatpants living in their parent's basement. Sounds like projection to me.

Yeah. I WISH my parents had a basement.

I wish mine still lived in their previous home. It had a finished basement (well, technically it was a bi-level) complete with bathrooms and bedrooms.
    That'd be a nice setup! :D

Now, my mother lives in a much smaller home with no basement, while my
father and his wife live in a home with a clean, dry basement but with no facilities. It does at least have electric and is a walk out. ;)

Back in the day, before my time (I am over 50), they promoted cigarettes differently. In some cases, I believe that consumers were even lead to
    believe they might be healthy.

By the time I came along, there was already some PSA advertising,
especially from the American Cancer Society, about how smoking could kill
you. They had not yet got to promoting the dangers of second-hand smoke,
or smoking while pregnant, but they'd at least got as far as it could kill
    you.

I had a lot of relatives, but none I lived with, that were life-long
smokers at the time. It was really difficult for them to even consider stopping. What surprised me was how many people my age, and slightly
younger, who picked up the habit despite the dire warnings.

It surprises me even more now that cigarette smoking seems to be making a comeback.

I have noticed that there's a lot of smokers, and they continue on. It's extremely addicting. I started smoking around 10 and I stopped when i was 28 and I still want a cig when I smell someone smoking one. If you have friends who smoke you pretty much have no chance of quitting.

I'm surprised they didn't show ads with cartoon babies smoking. They probably tried to, but it was shot down.

They had doctors in ads, lucille ball and her husband. They said it relieved fatigue in sports. All kinds of dumb shit.

I don't think ads helped the sales. It's a drug and drugs sell themselves.

in my area they just kept the ashtrays out and paid the little fine.
eventually owners changed and they took that away.

i have mixed feelings. I don't like stinking like cigs.
they should just have bars with smoking and bars with non smoking.

furthermore, part of my reason for quitting is people were always hitting me up for cigs. either random losers on the street or people who quit buying cigs and just borrow from people. totally annoying.

my casino went to non smoking and i wonder how that hurt them. nobody there is going to go into a smoking area. they want to smoke at the machines.

I never had I blood-sugar until after I quit smoking and drinking sodas, etc.. I'ts crazy.. All of it started less than a month after I stopped, But I had also stopped a long bout of an opoid addiction so I'm sure that may have had more to do with a lot of the health issues.

I'm happy I stopped too.. It's crazy I tried and tried to stop smoking numerous times and never could, then one day I just had an epiphany that I was not going to die young and leave a good looking corps like I thought I was going to. That I was actually probably going to live a lot longer than I thought and I wanted my body to be able to keep up with my mind. After that I just could'nt smoke anymore. cigarettes tasted like crap.. I kept a pack in my pocket for a whole week just in case, but I just could'nt light another up.

The opiotes were a little harder to come off of after so many years of use and abuse, it wasnt like I was getting high off them anymore, I was just maintaining. But I'm so happy to be off all that.. And sugary drinks too.. I stopped it all, all around the same time 4 years ago.

To this day I still cannot stand to smell cigarettes and cant stand the taste or the consistancy of a soda, cannot believe I used to consume so much of that crap.

Yep, I've known of a couple people that have died that way. Addiction is bad and one cannot let themselves think that they are above it, or over it.. theres always that one event, sound, smell, or anything that could trigger a relapse. So definaly I stay very aware of that and use time to stop and think. It's definatly not worth it, I have distanced myself from ANYONE I used to hang with. It's far too dangerous anymore to fool with anything, they are putting carfentanil in EVERYTHING, spiking pain pills, xanax. vapes. marijuana, I mean everything. and it's crazy.. there is definatly no room for complacency.

When I was ~25, I went out for a while with a lady who smoked. I never
could figure out how she did it but she never smelled like she smoked. I
know she smoked outside often, but I also know she smoked in her car and in other indoor places (you could smoke in restaurants back then, for example).

OTOH, about 10 years ago I went out for a few times with another gal who smoked. She was also, IMHO, an alcoholic. She often smelled like an
ashtray that someone had spilled stale beer in. I am glad I didn't date

It seems to me things like that in moderation are okay. Pepsi is one of my favorite sodas (I like it better than Coke).

I prefer Double Cola, Red Rock, or RC, but they can be more difficult to
    find (especially the first two).

My real soda "vices" are Ski and Ale-8-One. ;)

To this day I still cannot stand to smell cigarettes and cant stand the taste or the consistancy of a soda, cannot believe I used to consume so much of that crap.

Pepsi is the last of my 'vices' and one I need to stop and soon...

I quit soda years ago and I was a habitual drinker. I just quit cold turkey and don't have any suggestions other than when I feel a hankering I actually have carbonated water. It kind of fakes me out a little that I'm having a soda. I realize it's not the same thing and might even be not attactive, I certainly didn't like them. But I do now and it fills the need when I need it.

Funny you mention the faking out thing. Sometimes I'll have a carbonated water and it tricks my brain into thinking I'm having an alcoholic drink, and then it makes me want a cigarette.

whats disgusting is when people hit it hard and it's in their clothes and their whole body. that smells horrible.

Yes it does. Even when they come in from outside after smoking the cheap native "bag o' smokes".

When I was ~25, I went out for a while with a lady who smoked. I never could figure out how she did it but she never smelled like she smoked. I know she smoked outside often, but I also know she smoked in her car and in other indoor places (you could smoke in restaurants back then, for example).

yeah, i had a coworker who smoked a lot and didn't smell. she would just smoke outside.

the real ones (and drank like fish).

Hand sanitizing wasn't a big thing back then. Washing was though. ;) I
think she used a perfume or lotion that must have either got rid of it or covered it up real good.
